Shrek is a fearsome green ogre living in isolation in his own cozy little swamp. He is not receptive to visitors, and fends off the occasional party of torch-wielding villagers with ease. But when the power-hungry Lord Farquaad turns Shrek's swamp into a relocation camp for dozens of banished fairy-tale characters (including some pesky dwarves, wolves, and fairies) Shrek's quiet, introverted life is ruined. Joined by the talkative Donkey, Shrek makes his way to Farquaad's realm of Duloc, where the Lord makes Shrek an offer: He will rid Shrek's land of the unwanted visitors if Shrek will go on a simple quest to free Princess Fiona from her remote, dragon-guarded castle and convince her to marry Farquaad. On their quest, Shrek and Donkey run into a number of bizarre situations, and Shrek finds himself realizing that he isn't quite the fearsome monster he has always made himself out to be.

Movie Trivia

• Computer animation production started on the project on 31 October 1996 and took more than four and a half years to complete.

• The main actors never met each other. All read their parts separately, with a reader feeding them the lines.

• This film was the first winner for the Best Animated Feature Film category of the Academy Awards 2002.

• In the scene where Princess Fiona fights Robin Hood's merry men and jumps up for a "Matrix"-style, suspended animation kick, a part of her hair is standing straight up (to which Princess Fiona quickly re-adjusts it). This is in reference to Cameron Diaz's famous "hair gel" scene in "There's Something About Mary".

• Cameron Diaz became very physical when recording her "Matrix"-style kung fu moves for her scene with Robin Hood and his Merry Men, and even broke out into Cantonese at times since she had completed Kung Fu training during the production of "Charlie's Angels".

• The scene where Princess Fiona burps was not originally included, and was written only after Cameron Diaz burped after drinking some coke during a recording session.

• During a voiceover session, Cody Cameron suggested that Cameron Diaz marry him "...so you can become Cameron Cameron".

• John Lithgow later admitted that, although he enjoyed recording the voice of Lord Farquaad, he was a little disappointed that he never actually got to work directly with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, or Eddie Murphy.

• In the scene where Farquaad is shown three beautiful princesses to choose from, Princess Fiona is quoted as "liking Pina Colada's and getting caught in the rain". This is referred to in Diaz's film "The Sweetest Thing" when she and her friend play this song incessantly while driving along the highway.

Movie Quotes

Princess Fiona: What are you doing? You know, you should sweep me off my feet out yonder window and down a rope onto your valiant steed.
Shrek: You've had a lot of time to plan this, haven't you?

Princess Fiona: You didn't slay the dragon?
Shrek: It's on my "to do" list. Now come on.
Princess Fiona: But this isn't right. You're meant to charge in, sword drawn, banner flying-that's what all the other knights did.
Shrek: Yeah, right before they burst into flame.

Princess Fiona: What kind of a knight are you?
Shrek: One of a kind.

Princess Fiona: The battle is won. You may remove your helmet, good Sir Knight.
Shrek: Uh, no.
Princess Fiona: Why not?
Shrek: I have helmet hair.
Princess Fiona: Please. I would'st look upon the face of my rescuer.
Shrek: Oh, no, you wouldn't... tst.
Princess Fiona: But... how will you kiss me?
Shrek: What? That wasn't in the job description.
Donkey: Maybe it's a perk.

Princess Fiona: I'm supposed to be rescued by my -true love-, not by some ogre and his -pet-!
Donkey: Well, so much for "noble steed."

Princess Fiona: By night one way, by day another. This shall be the norm. Until you find true love's first kiss. Then... take love's true form.
